Courtauld Gallery brings colour to years 3 and 4

Years 3 and 4 were joined by a specialist art educator from the Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House last week and made some amazing art works.

Year 3 are exploring colour at the moment as part of their Creative Curriculum work on the arctic’s Northern lights so they started by reviewing how primary and secondary colours are made using their own colour wheels.

Then they made their own version of the painting Northern Lights by Anna Boberg (see the painting and find out more here).

Finally, they used everything they’d learnt about colour to paint self-portraits inspired by the artist Jordan Casteel.

Meanwhile, year 4 were learning all about portraiture. The Courtauld Gallery – which is currently closed for refurbishment – has an amazing collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings and so year 4 focused on Van Gogh’s famous Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (see the painting and find out more here).

They worked together to make their own version of this famous painting using oil pastels.

And then put it altogether to make their own version of the famous portrait.

Well done years 3 and 4, all your work looks stunning!
