PE and Sport at St Gabriel’s
In Physical Education, our pupils are encouraged to be healthy, active children with the view for them to be lifelong, active citizens and for an active lifestyle to contribute to both their mental and physical well-being. All PE lessons are designed to teach and learn new skills and to use these as building blocks to learn new games and sports. All lessons are fully inclusive and healthy competition is also encouraged. Our goal is to increase the amount of time our pupils are active every day by having a wide selection of extracurricular clubs in which are available to all children.
All classes have 2 sessions of PE a week involving developing and learning new skills and working on fitness. Our PE sessions take place in either the playground, the Great Hall, or on the Chippendale Astroturf Pitch in the centre of the Churchill Gardens estate. Children take part in intra school (house competitions for a variety of sports) and inter school competitions with other Westminster schools. We also have a sports day at the end of the year, where children compete and earn points for their houses.
At St Gabriel’s we are dedicated to improving the health and well-being or all our pupils. Three times a week, each class will participate in 5-10 minutes of running. By the end of Y6, we aim for all our children to be able to run at least a mile in under 10 minutes. Children run at their own pace outside in the fresh air, no matter what the weather. It is fully inclusive, every child, whatever their circumstance, age or ability, succeeds at The Daily Mile.
At our school, the benefits have been positive. As well as improving our fitness, it has had a positive impact on physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing of all pupils. Resilience is higher, as well as self-esteem and their determination to beat personal bests. It helps children.
We also work with partners to enhance our provision, for example MCC cricket coaches and Chelsea Football.
The PE and Sport Premium
The PE and Sport Premium is the additional funding each primary school is given to spend on achieving a self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport they offer. For the year 2018-19 we received £17,700 to spend specifically on PE and sport.
At St Gabriel’s, we spend the funding to provide, equip and sustain, high quality PE lessons, as well as a wide and exciting range of extra-curricular opportunities.
At St Gabriel’s our children learn life-long swimming skills. We aim to ensure that children are competent swimmers by the time they leave St Gabriel’s. Swimming takes place at the Queen Mother Sports Centre, a short walk from St Gabriel’s Primary School.
